Miss America is Miss Utah in my mind. There was no better candidate, from a standpoint of beauty, backbone, mind & spirit. My hat is off to you, and your self-less contributions to this nation. When Miss America said this year would be different, I truly believed them. I tuned in for the first time in years. Unfortunately, there was no material change, and America's choice went home without the crown. The good news is that for people like Jill Stevens, it has never been about wearing a crown or winning Miss America - it is about doing what is good, right and just. She is still the winner in my book.

I too am disappointed. SGT Stevens is an exceptional humanitarian, NCO and example for our youth to emulate. I didn't see what Miss Michigan brought to the fight that edged SGT Stevens out of the competition. What little credibility that contest held with me is gone. I'm left trying to figure out what that competition stands for.

I did watch the pageant...up until Sgt. Stevens was cut. They did the "parade of contestants" at the beginning where each person introduced herself and her state to the audience (Her description of Utah was "Home of the country's highest birth rate- as long as the Osmonds don't move"). After that, they announced the 15 semi-finalists, followed by America's Choice.

Following a commercial break they had the "fitness" portion of the pageant where the 16 semi-finalists paraded onstage in swimsuits. Sgt. Stevens was the only one in a one-piece...and she looked great. The judges then voted and the field was cut to 10. Sgt. Stevens was the last name called out of the 6 people cut. Pretty ironic that she was cut in the fitness portion. The only semi-finalist with visible muscle tone in the upper body and, as far as I know, the only marathoner in the bunch.

What really upset me is that the judges seem to have totally discounted the votes of the American people. Oh well. I hope being chosen as America's Choice showed her we are proud of her and her accomplishments.
