25 January 2008

People often read what they want to read and hear what they want to hear. I was inundated with excited questions about our unit’s tour being cut from 15 to 12 months yesterday morning as a flurry of emails passed between my soldiers and their family members regarding a recent AP article on the subject.

The article quotes an official speaking on conditions of anonymity and mentions that a reduction of tour lengths has been proposed and is being discussed. That didn’t stop folks from making assumptions, jumping to conclusions and getting hopes up. I suddenly found myself in the command center of rumor control. Apparently so did the SECDEF.

Despite rumors to the contrary, the top U.S. commander in Iraq is staying put. And no decision will be made about shortening Army deployments to the Middle East wars until after Army Gen. David Petraeus delivers a new assessment on the Iraq war in March.

Gates also addressed what he called “some discussion” about the possibility of trimming Army combat deployments from 15 months back to 12. A report in the Jan. 28 Army Times said the Army is on the verge of implementing a plan that would bring home early 10 maneuver brigades now in Iraq and Afghanistan and cut tours back to 12 months by Aug. 1.

Nothing has been decided, Gates said.

There has been some discussion, he said, but he “will make no decision changing the duration of these assignments, or of the tours” until Petraeus, U.S. Central Command chief Adm. William Fallon and the Joint Chiefs of Staff have made their recommendations to Bush.

I’m glad the discussion is happening though I’d prefer that officials speaking on conditions of anonymity keep their traps shut because it is very challenging managing expectations down at my level and nothing kills morale faster than rumors. Sgt Hook out.

  1. You always have to wonder who decides that this “anonymous” person is enough of an “official” to warrant anybody listening to them — oh, that’s right, the person that wants to write the sensational article gets to decide!!!

  2. I’ll help out with the rumor control. I’ve got a spreadsheet with all the active duty Army Units on it and all the major reserve units that have been ‘lit up’ for deployment.

The only way to make the spreadsheet work for “holding at 15 Brigades” in Iraq is to keep 15 month tours long enough for the effect of the “20 Brigade” year(mid 2007-mid 2008) to wash thru.

The only way to get to cut the tours of those already deployed to 12 months is to cut to 10 Brigades by the end of the year.

So its a very simple mathematical excercise.

Staying at 15 Brigades thru the end of the year means staying at 15 month deployments thru the end of the year.

Cutting to 12 Brigades by the end of the year means cutting deployments to 12 months for those units not yet deployed.

Cutting to 10 Brigades by the end of the year means cutting deployments to 12 months for those units already deployed begginning in July.

Go back and look at the Patraues Slides from Sept 2008

The decision point to go to 10 won’t be until sometime after March 2008.

  3. I’ve noticed that practically every news story these days has a quote attributed to those anonymous “officials”. I’m wondering if the reason they don’t have permission to speak is because they don’t know doodlum, but would like to be thought of as a VIP… or they’re just traitorous & trying to stir up s**t!

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
