15 January 2008

I’m pissed the hell off. I caught a few minutes of Fox News this morning in the DFAC and heard about a New York Times article that paints a lovely picture of OIF and OEF veterans as blood thirsty murderers who can’t help themselves.

Unlike the Times, Fox News did a little investigating and by simple math based on the figure of 121 homicides out of a conservative estimate of 700,000 of returning combat veterans over six years works out to a mere fraction of the national average for homicides committed by males aged 18 to 24.

For the life of me I do not know why people still read the crap published by the New York Times. I recommend you read the likes of Bill and Bob instead. They really let the Times have it on this one. Sgt Hook out.

  1. There are many who have jumped all over this and debunked it for the hit piece that it is. Thank God for the conservative bloggers and Fox.

  2. Of course you’re pissed! So am I & lots of other folks. They’ve (NYT) been revealing secrets, slanting or blatantly making stuff up ever since this all began - CREEPS! A lot more people are wise to them this go-round, though. Once again, I’m thankful for the internet where one can find the truth if interested. A comment elsewhere was funny - guy said he felt sorry for his parakeet, having to read that stuff in the bottom of his cage.

All our best to you & your/OUR Soldiers, Hook!

  3. Hook, You and every soldier should be pissed. Why the NYT thinks they are SOOOO special, I do NOT know. That article might as well have been published in the National Enquirer. It’s trash.

But, of course, now it’s out there — that’s the worst part of it. And years from now you’ll have somebody quoting — “Well, there was an article in the NYT that said . . . ” and so it will be held up as gospel, bec. it was in such a “prestigious newspaper”. Bull.
    Stay safe,

  4. I am looking forward to the return of all these kids and the perspective they will bring back. I am already feeling the impact of putting their bar tab on my bill. It appears they are making up for the dry zone out your way. I’ll be good as soon as the house I am building, sells. Is it true that Iraqi Kurdistan is the place to unwind if you have only a few days leave?

  5. Thanks for the link, Hook. Excellent reading!

  6. Sergeant Major Hook … The NYT story is pernicious rubbish, deliberate falsification indeed. As someone better versed in statistics than I pointed out, there were deliberate omissions in the comparison numbers used so the conclusions are completely invalid. Why do folks still read the NYT? Grown-ups don’t. Only smug Democrats and other spacey liberals do. I’m with Miss Birdlegs and your other commenters here.

Take care and stay safe, Hook, you and your soldiers. We pray for you every night.

  7. I’ll give you that the NYT screwed a news item for sensationalism, but, the bit about how fox DID their homework doesn’t actually wash to well with me.
Those clowns tried to imply that Obama was a Muslim and that he went to one of those “hate Americans schools” which he didn’t as it turned out.

I’m thinking that pretty much all the media is hyped up trying to produce the mostest news with the leastest of care about what’s true or not, just for ratings and what not.

Hey, it was the New York Times that said there could never be space travel, back in the twenties, but, after the “Eagle” landed on the moon, they posted a retraction.
I’m guessing that a retraction is an easy out for any of these outfits to say or write anything they think will get them audience.

    Them clowns!

  8. I added Bill and Bob to my sidebar a few days ago… very good stuff!

    Be well, Sgt.

  9. The NY Times is a rag, and since there aren’t any major “bad news” stories coming out of Iraq they have to turn on our Military, anything for a negative spin.

Ralph Peters wrote a GREAT piece in the NY Post which counters and presents many facts to debunk the BS that was printed.

I’m beyond disgusted with their garbage, and just sorry our Military continues to be maligned by them.

In view of a recent tendency to identify characters in fiction with real people, it seems proper to state that there are no real people in this volume: both the characters and their names are ficticious. Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
