As I mentioned in my initial posting regarding the report cards on Veteran’s Charities, I’ve nothing but high praise for the Soldiers’ Angels. Thanks to the investigative skills of MaryAnn we now have proof to counter the AIP report…

This is from the AIP website’s writeup about Soldiers’ Angels:

“A closer look at one of SA’s programs could dash such hopes about this AIP D-rated charity. (The major reason for this rating is that SA spent only 36% of its total 2006 cash expenses on program services.)”

However, a look at the SA 2006 financial report reveals that:

- Program expenses (support for the Troops) - 64%
- Supporting services (fundraising and admin) - 36%

They reversed the numbers. One should be able to expect more accuracy from a so-called watchdog organization, but apparently one cannot.

Not a single member of SA’s Board receives a salary of any kind. Admin is typically things such as postage, accounting fees, etc. And fundraising in the form of direct mail is a necessity for smaller organizations like SA.

It’s also unfortunate that the financials of organizations like SA cannot take volunteer time/money into account. As Shayna notes, it is an especially large part of what SA does, including hospital/VA visits and the many thousands of Angels who adopt soldiers and support them with their own time (and money!) by sending letters and packages.

As a deployed Command Sergeant Major of a Battalion with over 700 Soldiers I can assure you that support from these Angels is evident throughout my unit. There is not one Soldier in this outfit that has not been touched by the wonderful volunteers from Soldiers’ Angels; they’ve earned an A+ in my book. Sgt Hook out.

  2. I linked to your site. Hope you don’t mind.

I am doing research for a new book and from time to time would like to get your input. Let me know if you are interested. I want to talk to “front liners” like you. Let me know if any of you buds want to link in as well or contribute to the research. It will be on the impact and the future small wars will have on how the military functions and prepares itself.

    Later, and keep safe.

  3. Well said, Sgt. In addition to a full-time job, full-time school, and teenage kids, I spend nearly 15 hours a week managing several teams for SA, plus supporting 1 official, 2 unofficial, and 2 (soon to be 4) friends of the family with gifts, letters, emails, and time. It is said that spent time cannot be recovered; time well spent is something on which I prefer to spend my money and energy. As always, I’m humbled by the service of the great men and women of our military. If it makes one soldier’s day a little brighter, more bearable, then it is worth every cent and second. Peace and safety to all of you… you have my deepest gratitude.

In view of a recent tendency to identify characters in fiction with real people, it seems proper to state that there are no real people in this volume: both the characters and their names are ficticious. The names or designations of any military units are ficticious. There are no living people nor existing military units presented in this book. -Ernest Hemingway

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
