That’s right, one of your Soldiers could be the next Miss America. Sergeant Jill Stevens of 1st Battalion, 211th Aviation Regiment from the Utah National Guard is competing for the title of Miss America 2008. I happen to know SGT Stevens, we served together in Afghanistan and she was a huge supporter of Operation Shoe Fly. She went to the hospital every Sunday that she was available to help deliver shoes and other donations to the Afghan children.

Then Specialist Stevens visits Afghan children being treated at the Egyptian Hospital on Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan.

SGT Stevens, aka Miss Utah, has started a blog to chronicle her journey to the Miss America Pageant.

The divide between Soldier and beauty queen, beret and tiara, evening gown and Army combat uniform, is not so vast to Sgt. Stevens.

“To me, they go hand in hand. The military wants people to get an education, to be fit and, above all, to serve. It’s the same with Miss America. They also want you to be educated; they also promote fitness; and the biggest part is service. Both teach you to be leaders.”

Which title best suits her?

“Oh, definitely the Soldier,” she said. “I show up to my Miss Utah events in uniform. In parades, I’m in uniform instead of an evening gown to show that this is who I am.”

I cannot imagine a more fitting candidate for the title of Miss America. And if memory serves me, she has a pretty good singing voice too. Good luck Sergeant Stevens, you’ve got an Army of supporters pulling for you. Sgt Hook out.

  4. How cool is that? I love it when pretty women can show that there is more than just the looks going on. And a voice too! I may actually watch it this go round, knowing one of America’s finest is in the running.

  8. She sounds like a remarkable young woman and much more genuine and personable than contestants in the Miss USA pageant.

  9. GI Jill got special treatment. The Army would not dare risk losing her life. She never has all her combat gear on and the Army videos never show the other soldiers who had to secure the area before she went in for her photo shoot. Why is one e-5 so important that she gets invited to parties and events with the senior command, while the real soldiers are left out in the field to do the mission. The Army is trying to use GI Jill as a sex kitten to sell the war in Iraq. Why don’t we give the same amount of attention to the other soldeirs?

  10. In my opinion, Sgt. Stevens was shafted by the judges in the so-called “Fitness” competition (formerly known as the Swimsuit competition)at the Miss America pageant. She’s a marathon runner for crying out loud. How much more fit can a person be? I was very glad when she dropped after being voted out and did push-ups to show the judges and the crowd who the most “fit” contestant genuinely was. She is a patriotic American, a healer for the sick and wounded, and represents a true American ideal one Hell of lot more than those body-sculpting beauties who were left in the competition. For my money and my wife’s I might add, she IS Miss America. God bless you Sgt. Stevens.

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
