27 May 2007

On this last Monday of May 2007, I ask that you take a few moments to remember our fallen. Maybe while waiting for the coals to turn gray, or for a fish to bite, or maybe just for the beer to chill, let us all make time to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may enjoy our way of life. Especially the 3,813 that have died fighting for freedom from terror.

Taps

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler’s Green.

  1. Thank you, Sgt. Hook, for this post. Thinking of those who made the ultimate sacrifice is humbling. I am thankful for the special day set aside for America to honor them. God bless all our troops and veterans for their service to our great nation.

We also need to honor our POW/MIAs - all five of them - and pray that they are located and brought home.

  3. Thank you, sir and AMEN. I’ll be among the few who make it out to see their loved ones tomorrow morning. Grampa Jack and I will have a cold one for you.

  4. Your tribute to the fallen with the Fiddlers Green poem never fails to grip me. My husband and I are Civil War reenactors and we honor those who have fallen before and since. They gave their all for a just cause…freedom. My daughter serves proudly and will do her duty in Iraq again soon. May we never take these freedoms for granted and hail those who keep us safe.

  5. Memorial Day.

This year, it is different for me. No less important; more so perhaps… different. I have, in the past year added others to my list of those I have lost in service. It is all too overwhelming and personal for

  6. Sgt.Hook,

Thanks. Each year I stand with a small group of other veterans as the parade comes by. It seems like, as often as not, we’re the inly ones that ever stand, uncover, and salute the flags as they come by.

Afterwards, I and a couple others will head over the the Naval Air Station and pay respects at the memorial garden. ther’s a set of plaques with the names of all those we lost over the years who were assigned there. I flew with a couple, and despite the years, I can close my eyes and still see their so-young faces, smiles, and hear their laughter.

I still hate Taps. It’s always been to me the longest 24 notes ever written, and the hardest to listen to, especially for friends left behind.

    Respects,

  7. May those that gave their full measure rest in peace, and may the rest of us never, ever forget…and live our lives in a manner worthy of such sacrifices to honor those that gave all.

Tomorrow, I’ll attend the parade and then go off to the Big Red One’s Museum, Cantigny. http://www.cantignypark.com/
