28 February 2007

I had the opportunity to watch a little television tonight, two shows in fact. First I caught The Unit on CBS and was very impressed with this week’s episode. Granted, there was bit of entertainment sprinkled in, but overall I thought Eric Haney and crew did an outstanding job of depicting combat and how different personnel handle it.

Then, while flipping through the guide, I noticed ABC was airing a show that caught my eye, To Iraq and Back: Bob Woodruff Reports. So I stayed up and watched. I quickly found myself riveted to the television, following Bob Woodruff’s story of how he was injured while on a patrol in Iraq and then moved by his compassion for the many Soldiers who have suffered injuries similar to his. There was some criticism of, and frustrations with, the Veteran’s Administration for the managing of care for some of our wounded warriors but I thought the discussion healthy. Again, I think that ABC did a good job of telling the story and sharing the challenges that our wounded warriors and their families face when they come home seriously injured.

It’s back to Fox News and Captain Kangaroo for the rest of the week. Sgt Hook out.

  1. Darn, I really wanted to catch this. Glad to hear it was a decent show, maybe it will be re-run.

I used to love to watch Cpt. Kangaroo as a kid…

  2. The Unit was the best so far last night - at least we didn’t have to listen to the wives this show. I loved how the SGM controlled the situation, yet deferred to the LT, showing that idiot Wallace the “correct” way a chain of command works.

  4. I agree with Jo; I love this show, but the wives detract from it, I think. I hated the story line last year with the COL and one of the wives having an affair, and I hate the new one with Mack.

  5. I agree that was the best episode by far and yes the wives are a distracting side of the show… the writers should concentrate on more character depth of the men … bits and pieces of their pasts that make them such a great team.

Just a random thought … has anyone had an update on Thunder6, Danjel Bout (365 & a Wake up)& how he is doing. I really hoped he would keep writing after he got home. Oh well I hope his is safe & happy.

  6. I agree. The BF loves this show (when he actually gets to see it) and he’s retired SF. What caught me most was the noise. BF keeps telling me how LOUD battle is and this episode conveyed that really well. I actually stopped typing on my laptop and focused solely on the action through the whole hour. I rarely do that.

btw - will you bringing the wonderful Mrs Sgt Hook to DC?

  7. I missed the Bob Woodruff broadcast (forgot, of course), so I really appreciate the link. Just finished watching - it’s very disturbing, to say the least! Guess we need to be nagging the VA more.

  8. Hook, I caught the Woodruff broadcast, and was very impressed. Overall, they did a very respectful job. I hope we see Bob and his wife again, I suggested one or both of them as potential participants in future MILBLOG or SpouseBuzz conferences.

Tough on the VA, especially in the companion pieces later that night (Nightline I think?), but we need to see problems for what they are. I hope Bob means it when he says he intends to keep touch with his comrades, the wounded veterans. They could use a high vibility, media advocate.

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
