31 December 2006

Taking the suggestion of Downtown Chick and looking back through the archives of 2006 I’ve picked one post for each month I think worth re-visiting…

All things considered, 2006 has been a great year and I want to thank each and every one of you for stopping by and visiting here at Sgt Hook. I look forward to seeing you all again in 2007 and hope that you ring in the new year merrily and safely. My sincerest wishes for a fabulous 2007 to all.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
And here’s a hand, my trusty friend
And gie’s a hand o’ thine
We’ll tak’ a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syne

Happy New Year my friends. Sgt Hook out.

UPDATE: Andi is also reflecting on the year gone by, but I noticed that she conveniently left out these details.

  1. Sgt Hook … As always, it’s such a deep pleasure and privilege to read your reflections on life, the War, and your fellow soldiers. My husband and I wish you a happy and safe New Year, and once again thank you and your brave soldiers for protecting us so gallantly. Happy New Year, Bonne Chance, and keep writing — so that we all can keep reading your wise words.

  2. 2006 Year in Review

2006 has been an interesting year — I think there’s lots of room for improvement in 2007. Thank you very much to all that stopped by and helped this blog come a long way from the previous year.

  4. Ah, the greatest hits. Except, all your posts are great! :)

Happy New Year to you and yours, Sgt. Hook!

Looking forward to another year of your wonderful writings, inspiring “Hook Productions,” (one of which is responsible for my love for Nina Simone’s singing) and your reflections on the day.

  5. I just read your post on “China Marine.” Sorry I missed the original posting.

Well, I never knew an “old China hand.”

Strangely, I did and still do know a Marine who was at Guadalcanal. He is my next door neigbor!

All those years and I never knew. I grew up in one house and never really wondered about my next door neighbor and the flag he flew other than the fact I didn’t like the way he tied his knots. (I was a Boy Scout then.) Dutifully, I would go (sneak really) to his front porch and render the knots properly as befitting the flag. I just figured, “Well, he has the right idea.”

Over time after I returned from Parris Island and four annual leaves, one point always stood out. The same was true for my years at college, when I returned home for the holidays and the like I couldn’t help but notice he still tied those knots the “wrong way.”

Coming home still later, I forget when, I forgot all about the still improperly tied knots although the flag was still up. Rather, I focused on that First Mar Div emblem, a huge decal pasted on his rearview window. (Under the emblem, it noted, “Canal Vet” or the like.

Well, I had to ask. “Were you in the Marines?” Yes, was the response along with a precise accounting of the time he had served, something over twenty-eight months. (?)

Turned out that he was lucky. I have still not asked about that other than the fact that on one occasion he did alude to some dicy … um exchanges with the Imperial Japanese Army.

Well, that was enough for this man. Anyone who shipped off that island with his honorable (read medical) gets a pass from me.

Today, when I return home, I am still greeted but with a not so hale and hearty “Semper Fi! as once was the case.”

    My next door neighbor.

    Who would have thought?

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
