I don’t expect many folks are reading blogs this weekend, but if you are, consider answering this…how do you plan on ringing in the new year?

In my younger days, friends and I would celebrate through the night and into the wee hours of the morning. I recall one year, piling into a rental van and driving from Italy to Austria where we found the Austrian equivalent of a biker’s bar (based on the recommendation of a gas station attendant), trying hard not to live up to the “ugly American” reputation, we made some new friends, and rang that new year in with style. We had a blast.

In recent years, the lovely and talented and downright sexy Mrs. Hook and I tend to remain at home, or close to home, sharing a meal with friends or family and getting the kids worked up about the looming new year (they’ve yet to make it to midnight). This year, TLATADRSMH has an early morning flight to catch on the 1st so we’ll be taking it easy on the champagne, and considering I’ll have the merry band of pirates just to myself for the week (still on school break), I’ll need my rest.

What about you? How do you plan on ringing it in? Sgt Hook out.

  1. My husband and I buy a bottle of Champagne cook ourselves a good meal and watch some old movies (from the 1930’s are the best ones… like The Thin Man). Then again we’ve always been pretty quiet people so a big party wouldn’t do a thing for us.

Happy New Year to you and your family!

  2. Tonight we are headed to some friends house to ring in the New Year a bit early… but tomorrow I will be sharing the holiday with my guys… and the little one in my tummy! :)

Happy New Year to you and yours!

  3. Happy New Year. For my daughter and I we will be spending a quiet, relaxing New Year’s Eve with my parents, brother, sister and the dogs. We will enjoy a nice dinner, a good bottle of wine and our companionship as we sit by the fire. We can enjoy each others company and then sleep peacefully because of our soldiers who are fighting the global war on terrorism. This year as I reflect upon my year I have many soldiers to think about. This past year I have written to many deployed soldiers and sent cards to many wounded warriors.

  4. Sgt. … We’ll be staying home, sharing a teeny-weeny bottle of champagne [one glass apiece] and counting our many blessings — which is about all we old folks can manage without falling down and hurting ourselves.

  5. Sgt. Hook:

I don’t know what I’ll be doing for New Year’s Eve. My youngest appears to be ill, so going out as a family is off. We were going to church to play games and hang out.

New Year’s Day I’ll be assisting my husband taking photographs of pretty women. I think he’s heard that what you do Jan. 1 is what you do all year. He’s hoping it’s true. ;)

Happy New Year to you and yours.

  6. Going to my Aunt’s party, and visiting my cousin (we’ll call him SGT Airedale) and his new bride, in town from WhitemanAFB.

  7. I always do the quiet, stay-at-home thing. Except, if last year is any indication, the new kids next door (including their dad) will be shootin’ firecrackers and bottle rockets until all hours. I can’t get my music turned up loud enough to keep from jumping every time one goes off. If I don’t comment after New Years Eve, you’ll know the old heart didn’t make it this year. ;)

Happy New Year Hook & Family and to all your great commenters!

  8. Happy New Year! We’re back over here in Korea and we’ll be celebrating with my wife’s mom and aunt who came to visit us for the holidays. We’re all going to the post bowling alley where they have a pretty great deal for families from 8 pm to 1:30 am. There are about four families, all friends of ours, who are going as well. It sure beats going over to the Dragon Hill Lodge, where the average age is about 23 (which was great when I was 23, don’t get me wrong)…but I just know there’s going to be plenty of DS (Drunk/Stupid), and besides, I’d just rather eat some pizza and knock some pins over with my daughters.

Have a great new year everyone!

  9. I’ll have a nip of Dalwhinnie, make a whole bunch of Swiss food for the wife and kids, then watch a little football. Play with the kids , get them to bed and hold the Mrs. for the rest of the night and remember the times I was not home…

    Happy New Year, CSM!

  10. Dalwhinnie for me too! If I make it to midnight, it’ll be a miracle.

Happy New Year, Sgt… and to everyone!

  11. Spending the day with family. The evening with one of my closest friends (who happens to have a birthday on New Years Eve) drinking, eating great food, listening to our favorite music and catching up on each others life. One of my favorite ways to ring in a new year.

    Happy New Year!

  12. Hook…A Happy New Year to you and the swashbuckling crew!

MajorMom and I have our anniversary to celebrate today as well as New Year’s Eve…so we’ll be heading off to an undisclosed location within a comfortable drive of Fortress Hood for a fine-dining, wallet emptying meal! MajorMotherInLaw will be dropping in to the Command Post to keep an eye on the MajorChilluns. I’ll probably head over to BlockBuster to load up on movies to keep folks entertained while we’re gone.

Other than that…not much planned. I may crack open a bottle of Chimay Blue Trappist beer that my sister-in-law gave me for Christmas. If you’ve never had it, you should give it a try. Kinda pricey when compared to what you normally drink, but it’s worth every penny!

Happy New Year my fellow defenders! See you on the high ground in 2007!

  13. MajorDad - Oooh! Chimay Gran Reserve is the BEST beer in the world! I should know, I’ve tried enough of ‘em…heh.

  14. Happy New Year to all! MajorDad happy anniversary to you!

*Ahem, in years past I’d party until the sun came up but of late I enjoy spending a quiet evening with friends. This year that didn’t work out, so I made some dinner and I’ll enjoy a glass of wine at midnight.

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
