28 October 2006

Corporal David M. Unger was killed on October 17, 2006 when an IED exploded near his vehicle just outside of Baghdad, Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division out of Fort Hood, TX. CPL Unger died defending freedom and fighting for the preservation of our way of life. Corporal David M. Unger was laid to rest yesterday in Leavenworth, Kansas. John attended the funeral, as did the Patriot Guard Riders.

CPL Unger, who graduated from Leavenworth High School in 2003, would have celebrated his 22nd birthday on Halloween. He leaves behind a wife, Laura Unger, and a son and daughter. You can pass along your sympathy and gratitude by signing an online guest book here.

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler’s Green.

Words cannot adequately express my heartfelt sorrow for the loss of this young hero, especially to his wife and children. Thank you for doing all that you could to defend us; to keep us bathed in the warm light of liberty. I’ll see you on Fiddler’s Green Corporal. Sgt Hook out.

  1. Every day we lose beautiful, strong, intelligent, loyal and unique individuals. My morning ritual is coffee and prayer with the Coalition Casualty website (not as morbid as it may seem). There are no words to express the gratitude. There are no words to express the compassion and heart’s embrace for the family and friends left behind. There are no words… just misty eyes, skipped heart beats and furrowed brows… and a breath caught in the throat with pride and gratitude in knowing that only in our AMERICA are these brave individuals remembered and celebrated for their having lived the path they chose, for having the fortitude and strength of character, humanity, to stand up and take the responsibility for millions of people they have never met.

It is humbling. It makes me sad (so sad), simultaneously making me proud and I know, every single day, that those I love here at home are safe and able to go about their day because of these men and women and their loyalty … their conviction and determination to protect, honor and serve. Those I love are over there too.

For every loss, there are tens of thousands safe. That is HUGE.

Thank you Sgt. Hook for the opportunity to mourn and show our sincere gratitude for those who stand up and fall for ALL of us and for a greater future for EVERY ONE.

    HOOAH.

    God Bless.

My birthday is November 4th. My mom is throwing a party for me because this is the BIG ONE… a milestone she called it. A milestone more for her than me… I lived to 40. Ha ha ha ha…. she’s

  4. The Funeral of CPL David Unger

I attended the funeral of CPL David M. Unger on Friday. CPL Unger, 21, died in Iraq on October 18, 2006. He is survived by his wife and young son. His father, SGM Unger, served in Iraq 9 months ago, redeploying about the time his son was deploying …

In view of a recent tendency to identify characters in fiction with real people, it seems proper to state that there are no real people in this volume: both the characters and their names are ficticious. The names or designations of any military units are ficticious. There are no living people nor existing military units presented in this book. -Ernest Hemingway
