14 June 2006

Just a quick note to wish my mistress a very happy birthday and to recognize her for the unconditional support she’s given for so many years. At 231, she doesn’t look a day over 18. Happy Birthday United States Army.

Since its birth on 14 June 1775-over a year before the Declaration of Independence-the United States Army has played a vital role in the growth and development of our nation. Soldiers have fought more than 10 wars, from the American Revolution through the Cold War, the Gulf War, to the current War on Terrorism. This 231st Birthday is a recognition of The Army’s history, traditions, and service to the Nation, a Call To Duty, 231 Years of Service to Our Nation.

Now make a wish and blow up out the candles. Sgt Hook out.

  17. I guess that I will join in on the “Where is Sgt Hook?” question… Just know if you are out there… your writing is truly missed. :)

  18. Happy 4th of July, Sgt Hook and Family!
You must be beyond busy, Hook, to miss a post on the 4th; so just know that wherever you are and whatever is going on at work, you are thought of and missed.
But at the same time, how can we NOT understand, given the magnitude of the responsibilities you have.
Come back when you can; I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we’ll wait! ;-)

  19. Happy Independence Day Hook, thanks for all you do. Hope all is well, we miss you!

  20. Just wanted to say that I can’t find any great reasons to defend our current government. Im glad you have found some meaning in life through your service but I don’t agree with you.

Please know that I hope you make it home alive and well. Also - that you fight for what you believe and not for politic’s convenience.

  21. Hook! We miss you out here…but know you’re doing yeoman’s service with your new battalion. Give ‘em Hell!

As far as the comparison of the Army to a mistress…here’s my read on that one.

To me, the Army’s like a real “pain in the ass” neighbor but damned if he doesn’t have a well stocked tool shed…always has a cold beer, a warm smile and wave for you when you come home after a tough day. Sometimes you wonder why you don’t move after his dog slips across the property line to take a dump…then you come to realize…what if I need to trim the hedges later this year???

See you on the high ground and hope to see you back here soon. I’ll keep checking!

In view of a recent tendency to identify characters in fiction with real people, it seems proper to state that there are no real people in this volume: both the characters and their names are ficticious. Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
