14 June 2006

Just a quick note to wish my mistress a very happy birthday and to recognize her for the unconditional support she’s given for so many years. At 231, she doesn’t look a day over 18. Happy Birthday United States Army.

Since its birth on 14 June 1775-over a year before the Declaration of Independence-the United States Army has played a vital role in the growth and development of our nation. Soldiers have fought more than 10 wars, from the American Revolution through the Cold War, the Gulf War, to the current War on Terrorism. This 231st Birthday is a recognition of The Army’s history, traditions, and service to the Nation, a Call To Duty, 231 Years of Service to Our Nation.

Now make a wish and blow up out the candles. Sgt Hook out.

Those of you who read Sgt Hook often know of my deep respect for the families of your Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen, and Coastguardsmen. The spouses and children of our men and women in uniform are the real heroes of America, and Master Sergeant James “Tre” Ponder’s family epitomize this special group. I wrote about my friend, your warrior, Tre Ponder on Memorial Day. His lovely bride Leslie took the time to leave a comment that I thought all should read.

Thank you for your memories of Tre. It brought a smile to my face….and reminded me of all the ROK stories. Tre thought of you and Jay as cherished friends.

Memorial Day comes but one time a year for most, but the girls and I live it daily. We rest in the assurance that our family will be together again one day in Heaven. The girls and I gain much comfort from knowing Tre died doing something he firmly believed in and there is no place he would have wanted to be except on that aircraft. So, as you light the bar-b-que and pop a top, pause a moment and thank our military and their families. We all must stand behind our military or be prepared to stand in front of them!! God bless you, God bless America and NSDQ!!

By God’s Strength,
Leslie

Thank you for stopping by Leslie, and thank you for sharing Tre with us. God bless you and your daughters. This We’ll Defend. Sgt Hook out.

My thanks to all who have emailed or commented in my absence, my apologies for not responding sooner. The Hook band is alive and well, though not yet into a house. Yes, we’re still living out of our suitcases in a hotel but not for too much longer.

I’m off on an official trip later this week where I hope to finally meet the man called Greyhawk, I’ll update as soon as I can get online. Sgt Hook out.

In view of a recent tendency to identify characters in fiction with real people, it seems proper to state that there are no real people in this volume: both the characters and their names are ficticious. The names or designations of any military units are ficticious. There are no living people nor existing military units presented in this book. -Ernest Hemingway

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
