Actor George Clooney and his father have recently returned from Sudan with a message. A message urging America to take action in stopping the genocide currently underway in Darfur. A message worth listening to.

And it seems that thousands of Americans have been moved by said message enough to demonstrate, calling for action.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Thousands of people joined celebrities and lawmakers at a rally Sunday urging the Bush administration and Congress to help end genocide in Sudan’s Darfur region.

“Not on our watch!” the crowd chanted as a parade of speakers lined up for their turn on a stage on the National Mall, the Capitol serving as a backdrop.

“The personal motivation for a lot of us is the Holocaust,” said Boston-based Rabbi Or Rose of Jewish Seminarians for Justice. “Given our history and experience, we feel an obligation to stand up and speak out.”

A call for action from the citizens!

In an interview, refugee Hassan Cober said he was forced to leave his family and flee Sudan four years ago after many were killed and raped. He urged the United States and the United Nations to act quickly, saying he had no idea where his family was or if they were OK.

“We need deeds, not words,” said Cober, now of Portland, Maine. “They need to come to Darfur today, not tomorrow, because what is going on is a disaster.”

And yet, when the American military removes the despot Saddam Hussein from power, putting an end to years of tyranny and torture, that’s unpoplular.

I applaud Mr. Clooney and his dad for speaking out, and I applaud those who have taken to the streets calling for “deeds, not words.” I only hope they understand and support what they are asking for.

You see, “deeds” translates to diplomatic action backed up by military action and if one truly wants the genocide in Darfur to end, then one must eventually endorse the employment of U.S. forces to eliminate said evil. Now, I’m all for eliminating evil, however, I can’t help but wonder if Mr. Clooney and his supporters are ready to have American Soldiers and Marines pay the ultimate price in achieving their end. I mean, why aren’t the same folks marching in support of our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan? I’m just sayin. Sgt Hook out.

I think it a good thing really that this kind of pressure is being applied:Thousands of people joined celebrities and lawmakers at a rally Sunday urging the Bush administration and Congress to help end genocide in Sudan’s Darfur region. “Not

  2. Well, they’ll be satisfied and happy if we go in and clean everything up in time it would take us to watch a movie; otherwise, they’d have to take to the streets again and urge a withdrawal from the quagmire. As Jake said, spoiled, two-faced hypocrites!!

  4. Jake, you called it exactly right! Any invovlement on our part will be met with screams from the leftards, Clooney included. Nothing ticks me off worse than hypocracy.

  5. Isn’t this the same path whereby we ended up in Somalia:

    1) Big press build-up about all the poor people starving and dying and being oppressed. We MUST do something!

    2) Send in American troops.

    3) American troops suffer casualties.

    4) Big press build-up about how we must bring the troops home…

  6. I always find it unbelievable that the left, especially the Hollywood left, picks and chooses their causes the way they do. If we had gone into Sudan three years ago, they would be protesting our “imperialism” there. You can’t win with these people. They are particularly bothered about Iraq because we and the whole western world has something to gain from a democratic Iraq - possibility of greater political reform in the middle east and increased oil production. Anything that benefits the west can’t possibly be a good thing according to them, so our undertaking in Iraq must be the work of evil President Bush and the oil companies.

  7. The question is, should America be the world’s moral police? If so, why the military? Putting the entire Armed Forces in The Sudan would not solve the ethnic, religious and political problems that exist. We cannot and should be using our military to police countries that are embroiled in civil war. If we should, then why not Somalia, Chad, Congo, Uganda, Columbia. And in that case, how come we are paying the United Nations so much? Should we try harder to help famine and genocide victims? Yes, but dropping paratroopers should not be a first resort.

  8. Hypocrisy is exactly what it is.
My husband spent 44 years after the Navy as a stuntman in films and TV. I can tell you story after story of hypocrisy from those in Hollywood.

Oh they might once and awhile talk the talk of caring about the poor, the picked on, the down and trodden, but in fact it is just something for them to do between films.

Clooney has mentioned he wants to run for office in the future. He is just doing this to get on talk shows and try to begin being noticed as someone in the know about the world.

SGT.Hook….. you said…”why aren’t the same folks marching in support of our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan?”…..You hit the nail on the head. They do not want military action on anything, they do not favor the military and could care less about our troops. They USE our freedom that came at such a high cost with no gratitude to those that gave it to us. They are mostly all socialist, communists and loathers of our military. Yes there are a few that do care, that do know the price of freedom and they are good people that just happen to love their profession but are stuck having to be in connection to the vile left.

Even if our military efforts had fit into a two hour film or a movie of the week it still would have been attacked by the left.

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
