23 April 2006

As most of you know, because of military duties I was unabale to attend the first ever Milblog Conference held in Washington D.C. yesterday, but I was able to participate via live video feed. The conference was a resounding success from my standpoint and I’d like to personally thank Andi for putting this wonderful event together. If you get a chance, stop by and tell her thanks.

The panels provided interesting, thought provoking, and insightful ideas on Milblogs and their impact on the MSM, the millions of readers that logon daily, and the future of Milblogging. I was very impressed with all of the panel members and the questions asked from the audience. Colonel David Hunt (retired) moderated the final panel in the afternoon and was just fabulous. The discussion was lively and informative and left me with a sense of pride in belonging to this wonderful community of bloggers.

It wasn’t all business though, as many of the conference attendees met at Fran O’Brien’s on Friday night showing solidarity and putting more pressure on Hilton to do the right thing. They also increased Fran’s profits by 130% just from their bar tab alone.

After the long day of discussion, a Distric of Columbia Pub Crawl was launched and the milbloggers were able to let off a little steam before heading back to their respective homes. It seems that a couple of our esteemed friends had quite a bit of steam to release and ended up being chased by Capitol Police as they ran naked across the Mall. Apparently the police cornered the two at the Lincoln memorial and were able to apprehend the naked trouble makers as they unsuccessfully attempted to scale Abe’s long, smooth, granite legs. I understand that Matty O’Blackfive was overheard saying, “get your hands off me you damned dirty ape.” To wit the police officer replied, “this might be appropriate behavior in Chicago Mr. Paratrooper of Love, but not here in the nation’s capital,” and slapped the cuffs on him. When police asked if he knew the two captives, John Noonan, sitting next to the keg of Bud Light at Lincoln’s feet, answered, “never seen them before in my life officer.”

As D.C.’s finest were putting the naked, drunken milbloggers into the back of the squad car, John of Castle Argghhh! arrived on the scene. “Officer, wait a minute,” the Armorer shouted, “HE owes me money!” pointing an accusatory finger at a smashed Smash.

It has been reported that an angry Mrs. Smash refused to post bail and caught the redeye flight home, leaving the two roudy, naked, drunken milbloggers to sit in a D.C. jail with all the other criminals picked up that night. That is until Homefront6, wearing a toga, and Army Wife, who oddly enough identified herself to authorities as Emma Peel, arrived with bail money they had raised by passing the hat among the other more well behaved conference attendees.

The excitement wasn’t contained to only the Pub Crawl, however. It seems that the online moderator Greyhawk, while reaching for his beer accidentally grabbed the salsa jar chugging down half the contents before realizing his mistake. Thankfully, Mrs. G. had the presence of mine to act quickly, despite finishing off half of their wine cellar, to call the paramedics who came and pumped the Mudville Gazette editor in chief’s stomach just in time for the final panel.

I’m really looking forward to next year’s conference, in fact, my leave request has already been submitted. Sgt Hook out.

  1. I was able to log on intermittently to watch and loved it. I wish I’d been able to watch the whole thing!

And I was perpetually watching for Emma Peel and wasn’t able to see her!

  7. Actually, Army Wife wasn’t the liberator, she was one of the captives. I’m leaving in just a moment to bail her out. She was detained longer than the rest for psychiatric eval after repeatedly insisting she was Emma Peel. We’re working on a story for her “DH” presently, but it’s going to be a hard one to explain.

  11. Loved the conference. Caught it on the audio and video feed. It was nice chatting with all of you. Although sometimes I felt like I was back in school with Greyhawk and his STOP CHATTING. Just that it is boring here in Muskegon, Michigan. All the fun sounds like it was in DC.

  30. I know I’m going to ruffle some feathers here, but I can’t sit by while everyone congratulates these people for disrespecting our national capitol. I strongly suspect that the police officers in the District of Columbia have more important things to do than chase down drunken US military OFFICERS who are so disrespectful to our national mall and monuments as to run around naked and try to climb a national memorial to a former commander in chief. They make such a big deal on their blogs about how they do whatever the commander in chief says and how much they respect that office, and then the do something like this to the memorial to one of our most important former commanders in chief??!!?? I had the privilege to visit DC last year and was so glad to finally be able to spend some time soaking in the granduer of it all that I was very respectful at all of the monuments. What if civilians, maybe Code Pink or someone like that, were to scale the Marine Iwo Jima memorial while wearing no clothes? Or run naked through Arlington Cemetary? My gosh, these same milbloggers would be up in arms demanding stiff retribution. Does being a milblogger make it okay to do whatever you want and then brag about it?

  33. Here’s how rumors start! It wasn’t a “moon”. It was black lace panties pressed against a plate glass window. I was only following orders. Certain people were not keeping up with the “crawl” (certain people never even showed up, but I digress) and an order was given to “get the attenion of those inside Finn McCool’s”. HF6 went up to the window and swished her jean clad backside across the glass. I told her that was not how it was done. I have previously explained over at The Castle of Argghhh, flashing is an excellent means of communication.
*bottom* line………it was a *flash* not a *moon*.
Of course Jon the Mechanic, and John of Argghhh would not know because they were not there!
I am happy to report a marked increase in membership in my fan club

    Comment by Maggie — 25 April 2006 @ 0227

  34. OK, I don’t know what was going on in my head earlier today when I believed all the goofy details. I think I had just read it quickly, too quickly to not recognize it as Hook humor, and I responded without giving it enough thought to realize that it was too far out there even for the group involved. I didn’t think I was that gullible. I guess I had too much other stuff on my mind.

Hook has had other instances where he has written things that were fiction and people mistook them for fact. I don’t want to add to any issues in that regard, Hook, so please just chalk up my earlier remarks to a massive attack of confusion (stupidity?) on my part.

    Comment by Anthony — 25 April 2006 @ 0236

As for the bail money raised, there were no “well-behaved conference attendees”…we just pawned off Taco Bell’s kilt and Capt. B’s cigar stump to raise that money.

You can check out some of the AARs at Op-For; SGT Hook, and the main conference organizer, Andi, has a great roll up of all the AARs here. My recommendation: don't miss this next year. For your own professional development and for the betterment of our Army, even if you have to participate online as more than 800 others did this year. You can keep up with it at Andi's world. The BBC also covered it here. […]

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
