You’ve probably heard of the Blue Star Banners designed to honor your deplolyed troops, and the Gold Star Flags displayed in memorial by families of those who gave all in the service of our nation, but did you know that there is not a flag for your wounded warriors, until now that is.

America Supports You: Silver Star Families Honor Wounded
By Samantha L. Quigley
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26, 2006 – “Silver Star Families of America” has one focus: America’s war wounded.

“Our main mission is to make sure that the wounded of our armed forces are remembered,” the group’s founder Steven Newton said.

Newton, of Clever, Mo., founded the organization April 1, 2005, to establish a service banner that recognizes wounded American servicemembers of all conflicts. The idea was patterned after Gold Star Wives of America and Blue Star Mothers of America Inc. — groups that recognize spouses of servicemembers who die on active duty and the parents of children in the military, respectively.

Newton said he has made strides in initiating legislation to get the Silver Star banner recognized by Congress.

“I’ve been fighting this battle for a couple of years … to get the government to recognize it as an official banner,” he said. “I’ve talked to the military, … but it has to be an act of Congress.”

  7. I would like to say THANK YOU STEVE and Padre Janie. Janie takes care of the web site for my husband and she contacted Steve about Gene. He is a Viet Nam Veteran and has a cancerous brain tumor. In Jesus name he is healed and in his own words, “WE STILL BELIEVE”. The VA is not honoring him or taking care of him (as was promised)and not giving him anything for service connection. But when Janie told Steve, he and the Silver Star wanted to honor my husband. So Janie drove from IN to FL to do this special honor for my husband. I cannot tell you how much it meant to Gene, I and our family and it has changed our lives. I talked with Steve that night on the phone and thanked him for all he did and for doing this for my husband. THANK YOU STEVEN for supporting ALL Veteran’s from all service times. God Bless you and this wonderful group. Georgeine

  11. Good idea, something to put on the wall or mantel.

How about getting a bill passed that makes the VA take care of its Warriors.

They have been doing a half assed job for the last thrity someodd years and now are swamped with new vets needing help and care.

    They ain’t doing it.

Take my word or not, ask any vet or go visit and talk to them.

Myself, I have gave up. For the last ten years I have been trying to get medical assistance and care. It has not been with good results or with good feelings that I have to report.

The VA is not doing what its charter and its mission is supposed to be.

    To care for our Veterans.

  12. Sgt. Hook,
Thank you for honoring the SSFOA. Since joining up with Steve, life has been a whirlwind. So many wonderful things are ‘coming around’ for us, with folks like you who help us get our word out there.
It never ceases to amaze me: We are honoring, recognizing and thanking our Wounded Heroes….and the tears flow when they thank us.
We’ve ‘adopted’ a few slogans….Onward and Forward and the words of another Hero, “Let’s Roll”.
May God continue to bless the SSFOA and all of the wonderful Americans who are coming to know our Mission.
God Bless America and Our Soldiers!
    Blessings,

  14. Great idea, but I think the name could be a little confusing. The Gold Star and Blue Star banners/names are not easily confused with a military decoration. The first think that popped into my mind with the name Silver Star families was the Silver Star (i.e. families of those awarded the medal for valor in combat). Maybe that is one of the reasons for your difficulty in getting the idea traction in Congress. What about the Purple Star Families (all our war wounded are awarded the Purple Heart). Just thoughts

  15. Please be aware that other colors of stars besides gold and silver which were to be used to cover the white star on a service flag were established at the time of WW1. I just looked for my copy of the document I have which spells out the other colors and what they mean but could not locate it in the couple of minutes that I took. The document that I have is a catalog where people can order other proper colors and which quotes from the official order establishing the other colors.

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
