I’m saving up for one of these bad boys…

I’ve never used a Blackberry before, any suggestions/recommendations? Sgt Hook out.

  1. I’ve got a 7100 Blackberry, and its not bad. It is handy exactly when you need it. And it works as a decent enough phone also.

  3. If it was me, Top, I’d go with the Palm Treo. Maybe it’s what you get used to first, but I find the BlackBerry interface kind of clunky in comparison. On the other hand, I can retrieve my unclass email through the BB, and synch up with my desktop Outlook calendar at work which wouldn’t be possible with the Treo - the Navy won’t approve it.

    So it goes.

  4. Don’t have one but a friend swears by his, even takes notes at long-winded mtgs. He has a folding (small) keypad that he plugs in. Thought you might want to keep an eye out for a deal on that attachable keypad as well.

  5. My sister has one after having a Palm V for years. She loves her BB but says the cellular phone is not very good. I had a Palm V until it died recently so I am shopping for a BB too. BTW they are affectionately also known as “crackberries” because they can be addictive.

  7. I’m the Blackberry administrator at a Govt. labratory. BBs are good if you want to receive your email real-time from a corporate (or Govt.) enterprise email server (MS Exchange, or Lotus Domino.) However, I myself prefer the Treo. The Treo is much better as a PDA. The Phone quality is about the same as the BB. The Treo keyboard is smaller than the BB’s, but the Treo has a touch-screen, which the BB doesn’t. There are scads of add-on programs for the Treo. Also, sometime in the next few months, Blackberry software will be available for various PDAs, so you won’t have to be stuck with the “thumbwheel” navigation system if you want the BB email interface.

    *sorry… not really… but sorry.*

Hope you get one Sarge, if it’s really what you want.

  10. There’s still the potential lawsuit concern with a BB.

  11. Do not jump into bed with RIM networks yet (the makers of Blackberry.) As Barb said, there is a ongoing lawsuit at the moment. I’d hold off for now.
That being said, I’m an IT guy and I’d love to have one, I just can’t afford the service and I’d hate to buy a dead technology. Odds are that RIM will work out the lawsuit with the patent holder, but I’m not holding my breath.

  12. You probably have made your decision by now…but I’m definitely NOT a fan of the BB. I’m not and never will be so tied into technology that a phone call can’t solve a problem I’m having. For the cost of the service, I’d buy a Windows based PDA (make it wireless if you must) and a cell phone with enough minutes to get you through the month.

That reminds me…I need to get in touch with T-mobile and cut back my service. What good is having 1500 minutes a month when I routinely never bust 200?

See you on the high ground!

In view of a recent tendency to identify characters in fiction with real people, it seems proper to state that there are no real people in this volume: both the characters and their names are ficticious. The names or designations of any military units are ficticious. There are no living people nor existing military units presented in this book. -Ernest Hemingway

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
