Though they don’t get a lot of coverage, the men and women of the United States Coast Guard are on the front lines in the global war on terror everyday.

Our shipmates in this war primarily defend the homeland, but some ruck up with the rest of us taking the fight to the enemy. Welcome home Coasties, I’m damned proud of your service. Sgt Hook out.

  1. My brother was a Coastie for 10 years and didn’t get a lot of respect from other branches. People don’t realize the scope of their duties - from clearing foreign ports for our ships, collecting the remains of plane crash victims in the ocean, and catching pirates and drug runners.

Two years ago, a man came up to my brother at his carpenter job and asked if he had served on a Boston cutter some years ago. My brother confirmed this and then the man said “I remember you. My cousin and I were on an inner tube from Cuba and you guys picked us up, fed us, and played cards with us on the way back to Cuba. We were dying when you found us. I made it here anyway, but I just wanted to say thanks.”

I was always surprised at what he was up to on any given day and I’m very proud of him. My great-uncle, also a Coastie, was lost at sea in WWII saving the life of his superior officer.

    Thanks for the mention.

  2. One of my nieces and her husband are Coasties, stationed at Kodiak right now. They met in the USCG and were married last March. I asked her when I saw her last, what she liked best and she said.. the big gun!!

It’s always interesting to hear the stories they tell about their time at Kodiak, especially their sharing sea space with the Russians.

Welcome Home … I’m proud of you all!

In view of a recent tendency to identify characters in fiction with real people, it seems proper to state that there are no real people in this volume: both the characters and their names are ficticious. The names or designations of any military units are ficticious. There are no living people nor existing military units presented in this book. -Ernest Hemingway

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
