15 October 2005

Damn, it’s good to be back. It looks like I’ll have to clean the place up a bit, dust, sweep, and maybe make some repairs, but it sure does feel comfortable in here. Almost like sitting in an old worn leather recliner. I’ll ask your patience as I find myself re-learning the art of blogging both creatively and technically (not that I had previously mastered either) so if you notice a broken link, a typo, or anything nonsensical feel free to dress me down and set me straight.

Let my try to answer some questions before they’re asked…

The lovely and talented and downright sexy Mrs. Hook is doing well, as are our merry band of swashbucklers though damn if they didn’t grow by leaps and bounds while I was deployed. I know that I missed a lot but I have gained a newfound appreciation of a hug or a “thanks dad.” Alas, we left our pirate hideaway in the Pacific and have moved to a currently undisclosed location in North America (not a big secret but confidential for now). Life is good and as busy as ever but I’ve got to tell you, it sure is nice waking up each day next to the lovely and talented and downright sexy Mrs. Hook and making as many memories with our swashbuckling corsairs as we can.

I did manage to greet each and every one of my soldiers returning from the Stan as they safely arrived back home. And for those wondering, any previous misunderstandings have been cleared up and all has been forgiven. ‘Nuff said. I will blog more on the homecoming at a later date but suffice to say that words escape me as I try to describe my immense pride in seeing these great heroes return home after successfully completing a very demanding mission. I was fortunate enough to still be on the island for the big beach bash welcoming the unit home and as good a time as we had, I found myself incredibly humbled by those who made that happen. Your (and you know who you are) generosity welcomed home a group of heroes while thanking their families (heroes in their own right) on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Thank you again.

I started Sgt Hook with the intent to enlighten the gentle reader on what the life of a soldier is really all about, both in peace and in war. I’ve turned the lights back on for that very same reason. I’ve always tried to maintain a level of ambiguity and anonymity to protect Operational Security (OPSEC) for our forces and will continue to do so. Let us not forget that we are a nation at war and to coin a phrase of old, “loose lips sink ships.” The Army has recognized the far reaching effects of the internet and the blogosphere and are very concerned about OPSEC. Rightly so. Let it be known that Sgt Hook will never knowingly publish anything that might increase the likelihood of endangering the mission and the lives of America’s service men and women. Additionally, I will continue to be cognizant of the impact this blog could have on soldiers assigned to me and I will not allow Sgt Hook to jeopardize the morale and cohesion of my unit.

I regret to announce that for the time being, comments will be moderated as I continue to be barraged by a slew of slick viagra pushing, casino pimping, mortgage whoring, and uzqobj confusing spam bastards in my comments. Even during the months of silence at Sgt Hook, they continued to hound the comments of my archives. If I ever figure out an effective oplan to kill the bastards I’ll lift the moderation tool. Not to worry, if you leave a comment that isn’t hawking any wares, it’ll be posted.

I look forward to geeting reaquanted with my old friends and geeting to know some new ones. I also hope that I will be able to provide quality postings to Sgt Hook that you’ve come to expect. So for those dropping in for the first time, welcome. And for those who periodically kept checking in, welcome back and thanks for caring. Sgt Hook out.

  27. Dear Sgt Hook,
What a nice suprise to see a blog entry from you! When I read that the President of Pakistan asked for helicopters–the “big cargo kind”, I was thinking of your group in Afghanistan and wondering if someone you know would be helping the Pakistanis. If anything, it sure shows how much everyone loves a big, capable helicopter when life-sustaining goods are needed in hard-to-reach places! I was kind of surprised they didn’t move more from Iraq, but I guess with the elections, none could be spared.

  29. On the topic of Viagra pushers, Nigerian scam artists, etc.

I think a politician who is languishing in the back of the pack early in the next presidential primary season could vault to the front if he or she would announce that, on the afternoon of the inaguration, an order will be issued to assign 2% of CIA resources to hunt down and kill web Viagra pushers, fake Rolex salesmen, Nigerian scam artists, and their ilk. Not only would that candidate be overwhelmingly elected, he would be the first American president to be wildly popular throughout the entire world.

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
