About Hook

With moving Sgt Hook to the new host we were sadly unable to upload the archives from my previous year of blogging which leaves me with the task of re-writing an “About Hook” entry to go along with the new look. In an effort to get said post started, I thought to solicit help from you, the loyal readers by putting myselff in the hot seat and having you ask questions of me. Go ahead, ask me anything, as many quesitons as you’d like. Feel free to ask away in the comments or via email at hook[at]sgthook[dot]com. Really, inquiring minds want to know and I’m not afraid. Well, not too afraid. Sgt Hook out.

  1. Hello Sgt. Hook,

I was wondering how many shoes you received for the children of Afganistan?

    Sincerely,
    Mark

  2. Top,

What is the best part of your position? What is the worst part of your position? If you could change one thing about the Army, what would it be? Which of your soldiers has best demonstrated the Army Values over the past (deployment) and how? When you think of America, what do comes to your mind first? How did you get your start in the Army? What is your favorite activity to do when you are on leave/off duty? If you could go anywhere in the world (besides home) where would you go?

    :)

    Spc B.

  3. Cool, a chance to question the boss.

    1. If you had the chance to go back and “observe” one moment in history, what would it be?

    2. Who’s your biggest political hero?

    3. Who was your biggest political let-down?

    4. In 10 words or less tell me what your platform would be if you were running for President.

    5. North Shore or Waikiki?

    6. Boxers or briefs?

enquiring minds want to know? HA, take care Bro.

  4. Thank you for the opportunity to ask questions and get to know you better. I came across your blog in June and have been reading faithfully ever since. I love your stories and the way you have of telling them. You never fail to entertain and inform.

I’m interested to know why you chose to join the Army. It is always interesting to learn why people chose to join, I love hearing the stories.

Also, has keeping a blog helped you deal with the stress that sometimes comes with a deployment? And how has it helped you?

What one person do you believe has had the most impact on your life and why?

  5. Hello Sgt - I’d like to know how the soldiers really feel about not being able to find bin Ladden (or his corpse). Not the view that is PC - frustration? anger at not being able to get into Pakistan and root him out? resigned to not finding him? Thanks!

  6. Sgt. Hook,

I’ve been a faithful reader since your last deployment *smile* Thanks for taking the time to give us the truth about what is going on over there. I love to read them and about your young castaways! your devotion to your family is commendable. :) to ask you a question….hmmm….

I remember you posting about covering a mission for someone. Would you prefer to be flying missions than what you are currently doing? What is your favorite part of your missions?

    Thanks again!!! Semper Fi!

  7. As First Sgt. do you require your troops to read FM 22-50 every day? Is FM 22-50 still in existance? :>]

  10. Sheesh - all the ‘Good’ questions have been taken! I’ll have to sink low for this one. lol. Lemme see now…..ok. Now in thinking I was going to ask you how you met the very sexy Mrs Top I remembered how that happened which brings to mind the question of what was it like to be an Army Recruiter? It’s all in the news lately (thankyou Michael Moore) about how “subversive” and “coersive” the Army recruiters conduct their business. Was this a willing assignment for you?

    Like your new digs btw.

  11. Over the span of your career what is your opinion of the caliber / quality of the average enlisted person; commissioned officer?

    Volunteer army or draft?

What effect does the elected civilian leadership have that directly affects you quality of life?

What affect on moral / motivation / perception / on family does the liberal media have when they campaign against the war?

    I’ll have to think somemore.

Stay safe. Still praying for your family and the families of soldiers and sailors in Iraq and Afganistan.

  13. Ok, questions from an old soldier:

    1. Where have you been stationed?
The last Sh#thook unit that I worked around was the Black Cats at Camp Humphries ROK. I also caught a few rides to some scenic mountain tops in Central America with some hookers out of Palmerola AB in Honduras back in the ’80s. Was that you?

    2. Is there any better job in the entire U. S. Army than First Sergeant?

    3. What is the quality of the troops you work with like and has it improved since you first enlisted?

    4. Same question as above but for the officer corp.

  14. I’ve always enjoyed what you tell us about your work, and what you tell us about yourself, particularly your family. The things that motivate you, and the way you write about these things that help us understand honor and duty. You do it very well.

Oh yeah, cooking. I’ve stolen (appropriated) a couple of recipes from you.

    God bless

    2. If you could go back in time (in your life only) where you would go and what would u do different?

3.IF you good build a house anywhere in the world and live for your rest of your life where would it be.

    4. What is the most important thing you want your kids to learn??

  16. Hook - I have one simple question.

Why would you ask for questions from your readers when you know you have SO MANY readers it will take you a week to answer all the questions?

    Just kidding.

My question is simple: what one event in your life shaped you into the brave, insightful and humorous man you are today?

Oh sorry..and do you happen to have a single twin brother? :)

  17. Dear Sgt. Hook,
First of all, I lift you and all of our amazing military up in prayer nightly. My sons will be taught to always respect our countrymen who choose to wear the uniform. Questions…hmm…
    1) how long in the military?
    2) will you re-up?
    3) what’s your favorite quote?
    4) what would a soldier REALLY like to see in his care-package (y’all always say “anything is fine”)

Thank you for your service, courage and conviction, and dedication to keeping us informed.

    Many Blessings,
Debra Warren - Proud to be an American

  19. Sgt.,

What is your best war story?

What is the best war story you have heard someone else tell?

What is your favorite humorous military story?

Who is a hero to you, either in the military or out, or both?

What profession do you secretly desire your son to pursue?

What figure from the Revolutionary War era do you most admire?

What casino game do you enjoy most?

    Keep your helmet on!

  20. Um lets see. A lot of good questions have already been asked.

When troops are on deployement for long periods of time does the govt adequately meet your needs?

I’m talking about the necessaties, food, clothes, toothpaste, deoderant, bullets etc.

I’ve read on some forums that those that are deployed for long periods are fresh outta servicable underwear, soles in their boots etc.

  21. How about a picture? Or would you prefer I continue to picture you as a cross between the best of Brad Pit & Hugh Jackman….

  22. Hi Hook,
I’m keeping all of you in my prayers, especially your little Castaway. Hope everyone is well.

    1) How did you know that Mrs. Hook was THE one? Can you describe the thought process of a guy that goes to the point of that decision. Men are know as more logical/less emotional beings so my curiousity comes from a gender perspective. Hmmm, could there be a story in the making about this?

    2) What has been the best insight you’ve gained from your writing [aside from people being actually interested and responding positively to your style of writing.?

    3) How did your interest in writing begin and what/who helped you take the first steps?

    4) What advice would you give to those deployed regarding maintaining a strong relationship over long distances and separations? [I’ll be sending this answer to my young newly married cousin who’s up there searching the mountains in the Stan]

    5) When you finally get home, what do you think you’ll look back fondly on most during your time of deployment?

    6) Everyone is always affected by war. What has been one personal change as a result of your deployment?

    7) What has been a transformational event in your life (aside from marrying your lovely wife and having such wonderful children) and how did it change you?

Sending hugs and smiles to you all from NYC

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
