3 March 2003

I suppose that it isn’t quite a weblog without an “about me” page so, far be it for me to deprive you of a snapshot of Sgt Hook. Alas, I found it to be somewhat of a challenge to define “who I am,” but here it is and in no particular order…

Myself- I am an American citizen, and have been for 43 years. I’ve lived abroad for 11 of those years and have visited more countries than I can count on both hands. I like being an American citizen; I take it very seriously.

I am a soldier in the United States Army. I enlisted into the service of our great nation 20 years ago and haven’t looked back since. I spent roughly 10 of those years as a crewdog flying CH47D helicopters for the Army, and am currently serving as a senior noncommissioned officer at an undisclosed location in CONUS deployed to Iraq. I consider it an honor to wear the uniform and to defend our Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

I am a husband. Marrying the lovely and talented and downright sexy Mrs. Hook has been the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. I can only hope that I live up to her expectations as a husband.

I am a father. Nothing puts things more into perspective than fatherhood. The pleasure and pain that comes with raising four boys defines much of who I am. There is no other title that gives me more pride in holding than”Dad.”

My Politics- Because I am on active duty, I will not publish many of my political views here, nor will I criticize my civilian leadership. Suffice it to say that I am conservative in thinking and have the utmost faith in our system of government (see item one under “Myself”).

My Music- Has always played (pun intended) a large part in my life. There is nothing cooler than poetry set to a rhythm with a little riff thrown in. I absolutely love just about every genre of music, however, my musical roots lay firmly in that old-time Rock and Roll.

My Aspirations- Are to one day be considered a good writer and to help my sons find their goals in life, marveling as they work to achieve them.

My Regrets- I’ve a few, but I’d do it all over again.

My Fears- That we’ll lose.

My Books- Are too many to list. Hemingway, Twain, Heinlein, Ambrose, Tzu, Hook, and Jefferson are just a few of my favorite writers.

My Thoughts- Can be found at Sgt Hook so keep stopping by and please don’t hesitate to leave a comment or two.

OPSEC- Trumps all.

Sgt Hook out.

  2. No, Thank You. For your service to our country and for your blog.

Now given the fact that you are ONLY 41 years old, how do you define OLD-TIME Rock and Roll? ..;)

  3. I sit home in awe of men and women like you. The deep respect and honor I feel towards you all could never be put to words. The enormous scarifice that you and your families continue to make for me, my family, and families around the world is unmeasurable and we will never be able to pay it back. People like celebritards and others who speak out against you and/or the mission are not worthy of your worn out boots. They sit home in peace and comfort pretending to know what’s going on, playing armchair politican, armchair solider, from the comforts of American safety, which you provide. They may play soldiers on TV, but only men and women like you can be soldiers in the real world, and damn anyone who tries to speak poorly of you who do what others could never begin to do.

Please do not fear losing, that can only happen if people like me fail you back home, and I assure you, that while I may not be able to carry an M-16, and I may not be able to do 10 mile road marches, I am reading, willing, and able to defend the mission at home and perserve your honor, dignity, and the integrity of the noble mission you defend. Loss is not an option, victory is before us, and that’s because we are protected by the greatest military and most amazing men and women on earth.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU TO YOUR FAMILY. THANK YOU TO YOUR COMMRADES IN ARMS, TO THE COALITION, THE FEW, THE BRAVE, THE HEREOS OF TODAY.

YOU ARE SHOCK (POWER) AND AWE (COMPASSION)

  4. Sgt. Hook,

I don’t recall the last time I read something as interesting as your “me page”. You write like my father wrote when he was alive. He was a writer, yes, but he was also a military man. Air Force actually, he was the “radio” guy. (That’s what he called it, anyway). I am in awe of Americans like you, my Father, my Grandfather and my step son (LCpl. JOhn Anthony Lucente). You men are the reason I sleep so soundly in my bed, next to the husband that I adore.
Thank you for my freedom, and for honoring my step son by sharing my husbands story with your readers. I appreciate those who allow my husband a voice.

    Sweet Dreams Sarg!

  5. Hey, Sergeant Major,

Thank you for having the courage to stand up and defend our wonderful country. As the son of a retired sailor of the US Navy, I have learned to appreciate those brave enough to serve. Keep up the good work.

  7. Blessings, Sergeant Major Hook, and a sincere thanks for defending my freedom. Having a son who’s 4th generation military (I’m career Air Force and he’s Army and stationed currently in Iraq), and having been through the hell of Vietnam, the current popular support for our military is quite humbling.

Aim high…’cause that’s where the Air Force is…

  15. Sergeant Major Hook,

Thank you for your fine and outstanding service in the United States Army. And thanks for putting together such an outstanding website. I just sent you an email and hope you will have time to read it. If fate had not intervened (I was injured in the line of duty and was medically discharged as a Sergeant/E5 from the Regular Army on 18AUG89), I would still be wearing the uniform with pride. My thanks once again to you and your fellow soldiers.

  22. Dear Sgt. Hook;
My son (PV2 Joe Labeck III) is currently with the Guard in Afghanistan. He, and you, have my respect, admiration, and love. As I said to Joe when he considered joining, “As long as you understand what may happen in today’s world, do it. Protecting our country and way of life is an honorable calling.”

We pray for him and worry every day. But, the work is necessary, and he’s been prepared well. I’m sure that, with men like you and my son, we will win this war.

    Thanks for your time,
    Joe Labeck

  25. “My Regrets- None.”

I will always be scared by a person without regrets. But then, I guess, it suits a soldier.

  26. Your about page brings a tear…And as sure as our World continues to hold hope, you have the positive thoughts of ‘ALL’ Americans, several times each day…

  27. As a civilian volunteer assisting the recently wounded coming home from the middle east, I thank you and all our military men and women (and thier families) for thier selfless sacrifice. As far as fearing “losing”….don’t fear. What ever happens over there our guys/gals ARE doing a great job and any “losing” will be the result of narrow minded politicians and sensationalist reporting by an extremely biased press. Where is the poll asking combat veterans what they think we should do? As we are a non-political organization these are my personal views and not those of our organization. To sum it up, “It’s not about being for or against the war. It’s about the soldier.”
God Bless and thanks Sarge for all you do.

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
