3 March 2003

I suppose that it isn’t quite a weblog without an “about me” page so, far be it for me to deprive you of a snapshot of Sgt Hook. Alas, I found it to be somewhat of a challenge to define “who I am,” but here it is and in no particular order…

Myself- I am an American citizen, and have been for 43 years. I’ve lived abroad for 11 of those years and have visited more countries than I can count on both hands. I like being an American citizen; I take it very seriously.

I am a soldier in the United States Army. I enlisted into the service of our great nation 20 years ago and haven’t looked back since. I spent roughly 10 of those years as a crewdog flying CH47D helicopters for the Army, and am currently serving as a senior noncommissioned officer at an undisclosed location in CONUS deployed to Iraq. I consider it an honor to wear the uniform and to defend our Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

I am a husband. Marrying the lovely and talented and downright sexy Mrs. Hook has been the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. I can only hope that I live up to her expectations as a husband.

I am a father. Nothing puts things more into perspective than fatherhood. The pleasure and pain that comes with raising four boys defines much of who I am. There is no other title that gives me more pride in holding than”Dad.”

My Politics- Because I am on active duty, I will not publish many of my political views here, nor will I criticize my civilian leadership. Suffice it to say that I am conservative in thinking and have the utmost faith in our system of government (see item one under “Myself”).

My Music- Has always played (pun intended) a large part in my life. There is nothing cooler than poetry set to a rhythm with a little riff thrown in. I absolutely love just about every genre of music, however, my musical roots lay firmly in that old-time Rock and Roll.

My Aspirations- Are to one day be considered a good writer and to help my sons find their goals in life, marveling as they work to achieve them.

My Regrets- I’ve a few, but I’d do it all over again.

My Fears- That we’ll lose.

My Books- Are too many to list. Hemingway, Twain, Heinlein, Ambrose, Tzu, Hook, and Jefferson are just a few of my favorite writers.

My Thoughts- Can be found at Sgt Hook so keep stopping by and please don’t hesitate to leave a comment or two.

OPSEC- Trumps all.

Sgt Hook out.

NOTAM

In view of a recent tendency to identify characters in fiction with real people, it seems proper to state that there are no real people in this volume: both the characters and their names are ficticious. The names or designations of any military units are ficticious. There are no living people nor existing military units presented in this book. -Ernest Hemingway

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
